Navigating the costs associated with a vehicle purchase can be confusing. Whether you're buying through Remarket Space or working through DMV requirements, understanding the fees is crucial. This guide breaks down every charge so your transaction goes smoothly.
Remarket Space Fees
Buyer's Premium and Administrative Fee: every purchase includes a buyer's premium and an administrative fee. Both scale with the final bid price and both appear as separate line items on your invoice. Your exact amounts are shown before you confirm payment.
Electronic Filing Fee: $40 — covers online paperwork processing through Remarket Space and Dealer DMV.
Buying from outside Minnesota? MN DMV fees and Minnesota sales tax don't apply to out-of-state buyers — we don't provide MN plates on those sales. Your buyer's premium and administrative fee still apply, and you'll receive a temporary out-of-state permit valid for 31 days, which you'll use to drive the vehicle home and register it in your home state.
Motor Vehicle (DMV) Fees for Minnesota Buyers
When purchasing a vehicle, the following additional DMV fees may apply for Minnesota buyers:
Registration Fees
- Registration Tax: determined by the specific vehicle; typically starts at $30 for a yearly decal renewal.
- Plate Fee: $15.50 (for license plates).
State Fees
- Public Safety Vehicle Fee: $3.50
- Transfer Tax: $10
- State/Deputy Filing Fee: $12–$24
County-Specific Fees
- Wheelage Tax: $0–$20 (if applicable, based on your county of registration).
Title Processing Fees
- Title Technology Surcharge: $2.25
- Title Fee: $8.25
- Grant of Security Interest (Lien): $2
- Salvage Inspection Fee: $35
Sales Tax
- General Sales Tax: 6.875% of the purchase price.
- Special Rule for Older Vehicles: a flat $10 if the purchase price is under $3,000, for passenger vehicles 10 model years or older (excludes motorcycles).
Electric Vehicle (EV) Surcharge
- EV Surcharge: $75 — applies to all battery electric vehicles (BEVs) registered in Minnesota.
VS Surcharge (Deputy Registrar)
- Vehicle Services (VS) Surcharge: $1 — a state-mandated fee collected by the Deputy Registrar on all vehicle transactions.
